If you're missing a tooth, you have options. We break down the key differences between dental implants and bridges to help you make an informed decision.
What Is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a titanium post surgically placed into the jawbone to serve as an artificial tooth root. Once the implant integrates with the bone (osseointegration), a custom crown is attached on top — creating a replacement tooth that looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth.
Implants are considered the gold standard for tooth replacement because they preserve the jawbone, don't require altering adjacent teeth, and can last a lifetime with proper care.
What Is a Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge is a fixed prosthetic that replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring a prosthetic tooth (pontic) to the adjacent natural teeth (abutments). The abutment teeth are prepared (reduced in size) to accommodate crowns, which hold the pontic in place.
Bridges are a reliable, time-tested solution that can be completed in two visits without surgery.
Key Differences: Implants vs. Bridges
Implants preserve jawbone and prevent the bone loss that occurs after tooth loss. Bridges do not stimulate the bone and bone loss will continue beneath the pontic over time.
Implants do not require altering adjacent healthy teeth. Bridges require preparing (reducing) the adjacent teeth, which permanently alters them.
Implants can last a lifetime with proper care. Bridges typically last 10–15 years before needing replacement.
Implants require surgery and a longer treatment timeline (3–6 months). Bridges can be completed in two visits over 2–3 weeks.
Implants generally have a higher upfront cost but may be more cost-effective over a lifetime. Bridges have a lower initial cost but will need replacement.
Which Is Right for You?
The right choice depends on your bone density, overall health, budget, timeline, and the condition of your adjacent teeth. Dr. Gong will evaluate all of these factors and help you make the decision that best serves your long-term oral health.
