Stop Cavities Without Drilling

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a liquid antibiotic treatment that combines silver (which kills bacteria) and fluoride (which strengthens enamel) to arrest the progression of tooth decay. It is applied directly to the cavity with a small brush — no drilling, no anesthesia, no discomfort.

SDF is particularly valuable for young children who may not be able to cooperate with traditional cavity treatment, elderly patients with root surface cavities, patients with dental anxiety, and patients who need to delay treatment due to health or scheduling reasons.

At Accent Family Dentistry in Angier, NC, Dr. Brenda Gong uses SDF as part of a comprehensive approach to cavity management — particularly for our youngest and most anxious patients.

What to Know About SDF

The main cosmetic consideration with SDF is that it permanently stains the treated cavity dark brown or black. This is a sign that the treatment is working — the darkened area is arrested (stopped) decay. For front teeth where appearance is a concern, Dr. Gong will discuss whether SDF is appropriate or whether another treatment approach is preferred.

SDF is not a permanent restoration. After the cavity is arrested, a tooth-colored filling or other restoration may be placed over the treated area to restore the tooth's appearance and function.

FAQs

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) in Angier, NC — Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. SDF is FDA-approved and has been used safely in dentistry for decades. It is applied in very small amounts and is safe for children of all ages, including toddlers.

SDF will permanently stain the treated cavity dark brown or black. Healthy tooth structure is not affected. For back teeth, this is generally not a cosmetic concern. For front teeth, Dr. Gong will discuss your options.

SDF arrests (stops) the progression of cavities but does not restore the tooth structure that has already been lost. A filling or other restoration is typically needed after SDF treatment to restore the tooth's full function and appearance.

SDF is typically applied every 6–12 months until the cavity is fully arrested. Dr. Gong will monitor the treated area at each visit and reapply as needed.

Coverage for SDF varies by insurance plan. Our team will verify your benefits before treatment. The Accent Care Plan includes a 15% discount on all restorative services.
